Color Care

Proper color care is very important! After getting your hair colored you want to make sure you can maintain the moisture in your hair. You should consider these things after getting your hair colored. Use sulfate-free shampoos, get your hair treatments, use hydrating conditioners, always apply a leave-in before blow drying, and use a thermal protectant before styling your hair with hot tools.

New Year, New Hair!

Start your year off right! We all have great New Year Resolution!

Gerri Styles My Hair has a few New Year Challenges for you:

1
Increase you water intake daily- Water hydrates your body and helps to regulate the circulatory system, which feeds the hair follicle, that stimulates hair growth. If your hair roots are deficient in adequate water levels your tresses will eventually become dry, brittle and may stop growing.

Treat your hair and scalp to a treatment every two-weeks- Massaging your scalp helps improve circulation and stimulates hair growth, gentle pressure and kneading to opens up the blood vessels and increase blood flow.  Massaging can also be combined with a treatment once or twice a week. treatments help it penetrate the hair shaft easily and also reduce dandruff.

Try taking a hair vitamin! - Hair vitamins fill in the gaps left by your regular diet to provide your body with the nutrition it needs to grow healthy hair.

New Year, New Look, New Lustrous Hair for 2015!!!

Natural Transition

Transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair is a frequent asked question. Many want to know should they cut it off or continue to grow it out. These two choices depend on the preference of the person. If you decide to just grow it out over a period of time you want to stay on top of your hair trims, and treatments. Treatment should be done every two weeks, and cold wash once a week with an intense moisturizer. When choosing this option you really get to learn how to manage your hair and what product will work well for it. Doing the big chop is a very dramatic experience, but the great thing is you get to experience the natural curl pattern growing out evenly. Some issue you maystruggle with during the process is tangling, hair breakage and split ends. But Consider conditioning more, moisturizers, and using oils daily. Products that have proteins, silicones and mineral oils are great for your hair.

A  Few Recommend Product Brands

Gerri Styles My Hair: Pin Curls

More installments of my short hair adventures! I am trying new things every week to see what looks I like best.  Who said short hair isn't fun and versatile?  Gerri used the pin curls on my hair because it is a protective style.  A Protective style is a style that does not use heat on your hair.  I use this protective style in between my visits to Gerri so I don't have to use heat on my hair.

To Style:

Shampoo your hair and use a moisturizing conditioner
Set the sides of your hair with a set foam and sit under the dyer
Once dry use a light serum
finger through your hair with a blow dryer for the top of your hair if it is still damp
Section your hair
Curl and pin as you curl.  Pinning your curl will set the curl, much like hot rollers.
At night before bed pin you hair in curls and sleep in a silk bonnet.

There is no need to use hairspray to maintain, it is a low maintenance hairstyle, provided you pin your hair every night.

Split End Drama

Having split ends can be very terrible for your hair. This can lead to many different issues with your hair causing hair damage and breakage. Split Ends can be a result from many different things: excessive brushing, combing, curling your hair too often with extremely hot tools, not trimming ends, and blow drying your hair too often. Your ends should be trimmed every 4-6 weeks, when washing your hair use an intense moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, really focusing on the ends of your hair when washing.  Make sure you comb you hair out with a wide tooth comb after washing and styling. Use a serum on your hair that will protect your hair shaft when styling, and try to protect your hair from too much sun exposure.

Few Recommended Products:
Design Essentials Define and Shine 2 in 1 Finishing Lotion
Tresemme’ Split End Sealing Serum
Bumble and Bumble Seaweed Conditioner
Aveda Damage Remedy
BioSilk Silk Therapy

Gerri Styles My Hair: Feathered bang

This week Gerri Styled My Hair for my TV taping.  I wanted something different so we went with a bang! Since my short cut happened in December, we have been experimenting with different short styles.  I've had short hair before, but I never changed my hairstyle so much.  Having a creative hairstylist is key to keeping the looks fresh and fun.

This was my inspiration:

This look is chic, sophisticated, and fashion-forward. I love the volume of the hair.  I might keep this look for a little while :)

To care for the hair:

1. Wear a bonnet at night

2. In the morning, bump the hair lightly, finger through the hair with wax to give the hair the wispy effect.

Gerri Styles My Hair: Flair it Up!

Gerri Styles My Hair: Flair it Up!

Almost a month ago I did the big chop! Gerri has been giving me the greatest tips and advice to keep my hair fun! I wanted to explore with color but I didn't want to commit so my stylist, Gerri suggested I try a clip-in to experiment with color.

I loved this look from Melinda Williams and I wanted Gerri to style my hair using color in the bang.

I wanted to go for a punk inspired look so Gerri used an ombré effect with the red color. I love this and recommend anyone who is looking to add color but afraid of commitment to try it. Clip-ins add versatility, saves weak hair from damage, it's a great weekend look, it instantly adds volume to your hair!

Before & After

Care Tips for clip-ins:

When washing be sure to use warm water, a lightweight shampoo and great moisturizing conditioner. Do not lather the clip-in but simply run your finger through the hair.  Comb hair from ends to top of the weft.  Lay flat on a towel to air dry.

Let Gerri make your clip-in!

Hair Advice for Thinning Edges

Thinning Edges are a result from many things: genetics, stress, medications, tension, and age, to name a few. Scalp infections, and styling your hair in styles that cause excessive tension can lead to thinning edges. Bacteria on the scalp clogs your hair follicles and will not allow the hair to grow. So it is very important to have scalp treatments, and remove dandruff from scalp to open hair follicles to increase hair growth. Scalp manipulation, and  massaging the thin areas help  increase the blood circulation. A few things you can use is Castor oil, peppermint oil, rosemary, and products that contain Vitamin E and Sulfur 8. The more scalp manipulation the better!!

Gerri Styles My Hair: Sexy Retro Finger Waves

Gerri Styles My Hair

Last week I asked if this retro sexy look is something I should try. You answered and I did it! I love it Gerri did a great job helping me to achieve this look.  Although finger waves are not a new idea it is definitely one that us short-haired girls need to try.

This look adds versatility to a short cut.  I like that it can be dressed up as seen here or dressed down. This a great special occasion look.

Inspired by the 20s it's vintage and very relevant in fashion right now.
To maintain:
Use a lightweight oil sheen like Keracare
Gel-Eco
Lightweight holding spray we used Sebastian

I'm glad we tried this look. I love it!

Hair Plumping

Bantu Knots BEFORE

Big sexy hair can be a fun and edgy look.  There are tons of ways to achieve this look. Try a big hair style with,  flexi rod sets, bantu knots, twist outs or add volume with extension.  Today, I’m going to share with you the way to achieve this look with Bantu Knots.  First, make sure that your hair has been shampooed and conditioned thoroughly. Apply a leave-in Conditioner and make sure your hair is completely detangled combing from ends to roots.  Next, apply a light oil or smoothing serum.  Starting from your nape part your hair into triangle sections. On each section use a curly cream and apply it from root to end. Once you are done, take the triangle section and do a double strand braid, twist the braid in a circular motion and wrap the end tightly around the base of section. Continue until you completed the full head. If you have thinner hair should take medium sections. Leave them in overnight and in the morning and in the morning separate each section and scrunch style as desired.
Recommended Curling Cream: Miss Jessie Curly Pudding

Gerri Styles My Hair: Finger Waves

Another  Beyonce album! We can't stop talking about how genius and creative Beyonce is.  Perhaps one of the biggest take aways from Mrs. Carter after the music is her looks in her 17 videos!  One of the things I wanted to do but was scared to try was fingerwaves.  Now that I have my new short cut I am looking for ways to keep it fun, edgy and stylish.  Check out Bey in this video, "Haunted" she is rocking... FINGERWAVES!  I called it and now it's offfical, I have to at least try finger waves with my short do!

This is a sexy look taken from the 20's it's very chic and edgy. I like the  way finger waves frame the face.

I think I will take the plunge and have Gerri style my hair in finger waves... what do you think is this a look that you would try with short hair?

Hair Tips for Face Types

Sometimes there is a struggle to find the perfect hairstyle to fit your face shape. The first step in determining a hairstyle for you is to determine your face shape. Is your face shaped like a heart , triangle, square, round oval or do you adorn a long face.  Here are a  few tips for choosing the perfect look for face shapes:
  • Round Faces should lean towards more Side Bang, Off-Centered Parts, and when considering a hairstyle keep the hair around the face straight and either go short or medium length.
  • Heart Shape Faces should work will with curly, wavy look, fringed bangs, and middle parts. When choosing a style length is not a problem with heart shape faces.
  • Square Face Shapes can wear cute pixie cuts, deep parts with bangs, and layered looks.  Square Face shapes can wear many different looks and length is not a factor.
  • Oval Face shapes should wear bangs. Bobs and Long straight hair is the perfect look for an oval shape face.
  • Long Face shapes can go without bangs with most of their hairstyles. Middle parts and Side Parts work well for their face shape.

Gerri Styles My Hair: Holiday Party TV Segment

Gerri Styles My Hair for ... TV! Last week Gerri worked with me to create looks for my style segment on WNCN's My Carolina Today. For the segment I discussed what to wear to your company office party. Gerri and I consulted about the looks and how I wanted to have the hair styled.  we came up with these two looks for Brittany and Yessinia.

I love this look by Gabrielle Union.  Her hair is soft and classic and frames her face well.  This inspiration picture was given to Gerri and she nailed it.  The models features matched Gabrielle Union well.
The hair compliments the look well! Soft and classic, perfect for her office party.  Tip: consider doing something different to your hair for your office party.  If you always wear your hair down wear it up or add curls.  Do something different to show your personality.

Melanie Fiona's look is a side swept updo, perfect for the red carpet or semi formal to formal office party. We wanted to show off the models features by pulling the hair off of her face.  Rather than doing a plain bun or ponytail.  This look works on the model Yessinia and Gerri nailed it.
This look is a perfect option for an updo. Tip: consider looking at the latest red carpet looks for inspiration for your office party do.
My new short do is getting some milage! Gerri keeps my hair looking good. The look for today was polished but edgy.  I wanted to look authoritative and fashion forward, like a hiigh-powered fashion editor.

Thanks Gerri! I love my new short look and the style for the TV segment fit the look well!
